1869 Eclipse
This picture was taken in Burlington, Iowa, in 1869, the site of a solar eclipse. On the left, in the black dress is Vassar Professor of Astronomy Maria Mitchell. Inside the shed on the right, with his face turned away from the camera, is Dartmouth Professor of Astronomy Charles A. Young.
Thank you to Jim Hilkin with the Southeastern Iowa Astronomy Club for providing us with this photo and also donating a dozen solar eclipse glasses for our children’s story time on April 8th.
